Audio Device Testing
The UC Test Lab provides testing services, reviews and analysis on several types of audio devices. Read on to learn more about our audio testing strategy.
There are several types of audio devices that we test. Fundamentally, they all are tested for frequency range, audio levels, microphone capture quality and noise suppression / cancellation. The different type of device will govern what other tests are performed. We test any type of USB-based or Bluetooth-based devices. This can be a speakerphone or personal, audio only, device. We also test conference room-based audio gear. This could be a table-mounted, stand alone speakerphone, or an all-in-one type of audio / video device. Lastly, we test any style of wired or wireless headset, including earbuds.
Microphone testing is performed live and / or in recorded calls depending on the device. For a speakerphone, either room or personal type, we test a line of sight range noting any drops in level and at what distance. This is compared against vendor specifications.
Speaker testing involves broadcasting specific sounds, music and vocal audio through the device and analyzing the sound quality for clarity, SPL level, distortion and sound quality issues related to build quality. The speaker’s frequency range is also tested along with max SPL at certain frequencies.
If on-board noise control is on the device (either for the headset wearer or the person receiving the audio), we test this by introducing various types of noise into the room, both static and acute, and recording the output (if relevant). The recorded stream is analyzed for noise suppression capabilities versus quality of voice. A live stream is analyzed in real time for ANC capabilities.
Lastly, we install any type of control software or app and perform a thorough assessment of all controls and settings available.
For our tests, all devices are tested in identical lab conditions and also deployed per vendor specifications.
